Partitions and CSS: What is a Partition and CSS?

Because Partitions and Calling Search Spaces (CSSs) are likely the most difficult concepts in all CUCM, Jeremy decided to dedicate a specific sub-section to it. In this Nugget, you’ll learn exactly what a Partition and CSS is and how you’re able to use them.

Partitions/CSS = How we implement Calling Restrictions to CUCM. But there is a lot more than can be done…

Partitions: Groups of dialable numbers

  • Lines
  • Route Patterns
  • Anything that has a number

Calling Search Spaces: A list of reachable partitions

  • Assigned to any dialing entity
  • Defines calling privileges

Example:

NORM_CSS – Normal Staff

internal-pt
local-pt
none

MGMT_CSS – Management Staff

internal-pt
local-pt
ld-pt
none

LOCAL-PT – 9.[2-9]XXXXXX
INTERNAL-PT – 1101, 1102, …
LD-PT – 9.1[2-9]XXXXXXXXX

<NONE> = NONE Partition

By default, all numbers assigned to the NONE partition
By default, all devices assigned to the NONE CSS

Reachable by any CSS!

1. Create Partitions (Do not assign anything!)
2. Create CSS
3. Assign CSS to Devices (CSS can reach NONE so all OK)
4. Assign DN to Partitions (Hope that everything is correct!)
