11.4 Cisco VCS and Cisco Expressway Series Platforms, Licenses, and Feature

This topic describes the platforms, license options, and features of the Cisco TelePresence Video Communication Server (VCS) and Cisco Expressway Series.

Platforms

  • Specs-based virtual machine (small, medium, and large VM templates)
  • Appliance, CE 500, and CE 1000
Small and Medium Templates, Appliance or CE 500 Large Template or CE 1000

The capacity of one Cisco VCS:

  • 2500 registrations
  • 500 nontraversal calls
  • 100 traversal calls
  • 1000 subzones

The capacity of one Cisco VCS:

  • 2500 registrations
  • 500 nontraversal calls
  • 500 traversal calls
  • 1000 subzones

The capacity of one Cisco Expressway:

  • 2500 proxied registrations to Cisco Unified Communications Manager
  • 100 video calls or 200 audio calls

The capacity of one Cisco Expressway:

  • 2500 proxied registrations to Cisco Unified Communications Manager
  • 500 video calls or 1000 audio calls

Cisco VCS and Cisco Expressway Series support the platforms that are shown in the figure.

Note

The capacities that are shown in the figure assume that you are using a 10-Gbps network interface when you choose the large VM template with the CE 1000 appliance.

Cisco VCS and Cisco Expressway Licensing

This section describes the Cisco VCS and Cisco Expressway Series licensing options.

  • Cisco VCS series
    1. Nontraversal licenses
    2. Traversal licenses
  • Cisco Expressway Series
    1. No additional charge for VM software for existing Cisco Unified Communications Manager customers (Version 9.1.2 and later)
    2. Expressway Rich Media Session (not applicable to calls between two endpoints registered with Cisco Unified Communications Manager)
      • Traversal calls
      • IPv4 and IPv6 interworking calls
      • SIP and H.323 interworking calls
      • B2B calls

Different licensing options exist on Cisco VCS and the Cisco Expressway Series.

Cisco VCS has the following licensing options:

  • Nontraversal licenses: These licenses are used when only signaling messages traverse Cisco VCS (for example, when calls between two locally registered SIP endpoints are placed).
  • Traversal licenses: These licenses are used when signaling messages and media packets traverse Cisco VCS, for example, when B2B calls, or calls between SIP and H.323 endpoints are placed.

Cisco Expressway Series software licenses for virtualized installations are available at no additional charge to customers who have a license and valid support contract for Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM) or Cisco Unified CM Business Edition Version 9.1.2 or later.

Cisco Unified CM Standard and Professional Edition Cisco Unified Workspace Licensing or Enhanced and Enhanced Plus Cisco User Connect Licensing agreements support the Cisco Expressway Series mobile and remote access features for Cisco Jabber Cisco Collaboration Systems clients and MX, EX, SX, and C-Series Cisco TelePresence endpoints.

Each call that terminates on an endpoint that is not registered with Cisco Unified CM (for example, B2B calls and calls that involve Jabber Guest) requires a Cisco Expressway Rich Media Session license. Also, each call that requires interworking requires a Cisco Expressway Rich Media Session license. Examples of such calls include H.323-to-SIP interworked calls or H.264 SVC-to-H.264 AVC calls.

Note

Calls that are placed between two endpoints that are registered to Cisco Unified CM do not consume any license on the Cisco Expressway Series, regardless of the other attributes of the call.

Cisco VCS and Cisco Expressway Series Feature Comparison

This section describes the feature differences between the various Cisco VCS and Cisco Expressway Series deployment options.

Feature Cisco Expressway Series Cisco VCS Control Cisco VCS Control and Cisco VCS Expressway
Mobile and Remote Access Y N Y
Jabber Guest Y N Y
Business-to-Business Video Y N Y
Video Interworking (IPv4-to-IPv6, H.323-SIP, MS H.264 SVC-AVC) Y Y Y
Enhanced Security N Y Y
Video or TelePresence Device Registration and Provisioning N Y Y
Video Session Management and Call Control N Y Y

The table lists the features of Cisco VCS and Cisco Expressway Series deployment options.

Note

Cisco Expressway Series products are always deployed as an extension to Cisco Unified CM. The pair of Cisco Expressway Core and Cisco Expressway Edge servers provides edge features to endpoints that are registered with Cisco Unified CM.
